Limerick’s €1 Million Lotto Winners to Put Kids First

The winners of a €1 million Irish Lotto windfall have pledged to put their kids first to give them ‘the very best life’ possible. The lucky Limerick parents are still coming to terms with becoming overnight millionaires, and are the first Plus 1 jackpot winners of the year.
“I Heard Roaring in the Sitting Room”
The husband and wife scooped the seven-figure jackpot in the supplementary Irish Lotto Plus 1 draw on Saturday 9th February, matching the six main numbers 11, 14, 16, 22, 26 and 43. Elsewhere, five ticket holders matched five main numbers to receive €5,000 each, and there were 38,254 winners overall.
All lottery winners in Ireland have 90 days from the date of a draw to come forward and claim their prize, and the parents wasted little time in doing so, visiting the National Lottery headquarters in Dublin just three days after the draw.
They bought their winning Quick Pick entry from the Centra Store on St. Mary’s Road in Newcastle West, County Limerick. The mother revealed they found out they were jackpot winners whilst tuning into the live draw on RTE One, explaining: “I was in the kitchen on Saturday evening when I heard roaring in the sitting room. My partner was watching the Lotto draw on TV and was absolutely fixated on the screen with his Lotto ticket firmly grasped in his hand. He had seen our numbers coming up but we don’t have pause on our TV so we didn’t celebrate until we double-checked the numbers on teletext.”
Pay Off Mortgage and Fund College Education
The wife has said that they plan to be careful with their new-found wealth, and not fritter it away. She continued: “At the moment, it’s still hard for us to grasp what €1 million means to our family, it’s an incredible amount of money. We are determined to make the most of it and to give our children the very best life that we can. The first thing we will do is ring-fence a good chunk of the money for their college education. We won’t be frivolous with the money and once we pay off our mortgage and other loan we’ll celebrate the win properly with our family.”
The lucky family are the second winners to come from County Limerick in a matter of months, following on from Askeaton-based winners of a €2.7 million Lotto jackpot last December. Askeaton is situated just 12 miles away from the Centra Store that sold the winning Plus 1 ticket. There was also a Lotto Plus 2 jackpot winner of €250,000 in the same area towards the back end of last year, who bought their ticket from a Tesco’s store in Dooradoyle, 14 miles west of Askeaton.
