As EuroMillions players across Ireland dream of winning tonight’s €25 million jackpot, hopes are particularly high in one small pocket of the country. The Applegreen service station in Lusk, Dublin, has witnessed a remarkable upsurge in ticket sales over the past few days after creating last week’s €88.5 million winner.
The Irish National Lottery confirmed shortly after last Tuesday’s draw that the ticket holders had made their claim for the colossal prize, and the winning group visited the Dublin headquarters late last week to make it official. They will be paid their cash later this week when funds have been collected from around Europe. Even though they have decided to remain anonymous, the owners of the Lusk store are hoping the winner is a local resident.
Store manager Laura McKittrick says that business is already booming after last week’s win. The garage slashed the cost of petrol and diesel to 88.5c a litre to celebrate the news, and the crowds kept coming even after the cheap fuel ran out.
McKittrick said in the Irish Mirror: “This weekend has definitely been much busier than normal. We’re selling a couple of hundred extra Euromillions tickets a day. A lot of customers are coming in saying ‘this must be a lucky shop’ and buying more tickets than they normally would.”
Speculation had been rife that the winning ticket had been bought in Co Cork, before confirmation came through that Lusk had been the lucky location. Cork City was nevertheless able to celebrate a big win on Saturday, after a Lotto Plus 1 player picked up the €500,000 top prize with a ticket bought at Singleton’s Centra shop in Gurranabraher.
It will be fascinating to see where the next big winners come from, and whether lightning strikes twice for the lucky store from Lusk. You can buy EuroMillions tickets online or from authorised retailers across Ireland - just brace yourselves for big queues in Lusk. Good luck!
