A ticket holder from Ireland has become the first EuroMillions jackpot winner of 2017 after landing a top prize worth over €88.5 million. The player successfully matched the numbers 1, 5, 7, 17 23 and Lucky Stars 3 and 8 to secure the eight-figure sum, proving that the luck of the Irish remains strong in EuroMillions.
The fortunate lottery fan came forward on Wednesday afternoon to stake a claim for the prize, with the Irish National Lottery confirming in a press release, "the ticket holders have been in touch to make arrangements to collect their prize money."
The successful punter helped the country finally secure its tenth jackpot win, and the first since a syndicate of Dublin Bus drivers collected a €23.8 million reward on Friday 1st July 2016 . This is also the biggest prize won by a EuroMillions ticket holder since a father-of-four from Belgium scooped a sum worth €168 million on Tuesday 11th October 2016.
Ireland is no stranger when it comes to big lottery wins. Dolores McNamara, a cleaner from Limerick, won the biggest EuroMillions prize in the nation’s history when she claim a €115.4 million fortune on Friday 29th July 2005. While this latest win might not be quite on a par with that total, it certainly will prove life-changing for the victor.
The night also proved successful for over 63,000 other Irish ticket holders, each of whom walked away with totals ranging from €4 for matching two main numbers to €1,172 for matching four main numbers and both Lucky Stars. Ten more players also felt the warm embrace of Lady Luck as they matched one of the ten Irish Raffle codes drawn.
