Last Updated: Thursday 16th February 2017, 09:41 am

Are some people just luckier than others when it comes to playing Irish Lotto & EuroMillions? This is a question that countless people across the country find themselves asking after every draw. Well, now National Lottery officials have revealed a profile of the Irish ticket holders who have enjoyed the most success over the past 12 months.

Whether you loved it or loathed it, 2016 proved very profitable year for Irish lottery fans, with 103 players landing prizes worth in excess of €100,000; this resulted in a total of over €200 million being claimed by a lucky few from the Emerald Isle. The biggest prize of all was claimed by one lucky ticket holder from Carlow, who netted a €66.1 million EuroMillions jackpot on Friday 29th January 2016. But what about the other winners? Does it take a special kind of person to win a six, seven or even an eight-figure sum of cash?

National Lottery statistics revealed that around seven out of every ten winners in 2016 were male, with the same figure applying for winners over the age of 45. Drivers also enjoyed an abundance of luck, with a quarter of victors spending their time behind the wheel in a professional capacity. As for location, the nation’s capital, Dublin proved to be the area which generated the most winners.

When it came to sharing the joyous news of a lottery win, 40 percent of players told their significant other before anyone else, while a fifth of triumphant ticket holders revealed that they slept with their playslip under their pillow immediately after the draw. As for celebrating success, an average of one in two winners headed to the pub for a pint, while the Caribbean emerged as the most popular holiday destination to process the news, with 47 percent of lucky lotto winners catching a flight to a beautiful, sun-kissed island paradise.

So if you’re a 45-year-old male from Dublin who drives for a living and dreams of downing a pint on the beach while sharing stories with your partner, you’re guaranteed to win, right? Of course not! Absolutely anyone can win a colossal Irish Lotto or EuroMillions prize, it’s just a matter of being in it to win it.

If you would like to add your data to the 2017 winners’ statistics, this Saturday’s Irish Lotto jackpot is estimated to be worth €10.5 million. Before that, a EuroMillions top prize of €14 million is up for grabs this Friday, tickets for which are available to buy online or from any authorised retailer. Good luck!
