Lucky Co Mayo Store Sells Fifth Jackpot-Winning Lottery Ticket

To the untrained eye, Carey’s Newsagent in Co Mayo might look like an ordinary shop, but this purple-fronted outlet is fast becoming the talk of Ireland, thanks to a not-so-well-kept secret.

Situated on Main Street in the coastal town of Belmullet, this family-owned business has been delighting lottery fans for over 25 years. Thought to be one of the luckiest shops in the country, Carey’s has already produced a number of big winners, including a Lotto Plus 1 top prize winner who scooped €350,000 in 2012 and an Irish Lotto player who walked away with €710,422 in 1991.

In total, the store had sold four tickets that have seen their owners successfully land a significant sum, and Thursday night’s Daily Millions draw added to this total. Having matched the numbers 23, 27, 29, 30, 33 and 39, one lucky player, who purchased their entry from Carey’s, won themselves a prize worth €1 million. When quizzed about the win, Lorraine Carey, the shop’s owner, remained hopeful that the winner was from the local area: "It's down to a handful of people," she told reporters. “But, as always, we won't be speculating for reasons of confidentiality."

It seems luck runs in the Carey’s blood, as their other stores in Galway and Dublin have also provided good fortune to lottery players seeking success. In total, three family members have now sold jackpot-winning tickets, including a playslip worth €13.8 million in 2016 and a €500,000 EuroMillions Plus top prize winner in 2015. The clan have been responsible for selling tickets worth over €30 million since the lottery began, earning them the title of the ‘luckiest family in National Lottery history’.

As for the Carey family’s latest success story, National Lottery officials are keen to track down the winner and are urging all Daily Millions players to check their tickets carefully. “If you’re the lucky ticket holder, sign the back of the ticket and contact the National Lottery Prize Claims Team on 01 836 4444,” said a National Lottery spokesman.

If you would like the chance to win €1 million, Daily Million draws occur twice daily. For more information, head to the Daily Millions page.
