Saturday’s winning Irish Lotto ticket, worth €13.7 million, was sold at a newsagents in Belmullet, Co Mayo where two six-figure sums have been scooped previously. Lorraine O’Connor, who runs Carey’s Newsagent’s and Bookshop, told the Irish Times “we had a €500,000 win in the EuroMillions lottery last August and, two years ago, a customer won €350,000 on Lotto Plus,” as she and her staff celebrated their as-yet-unidentified customer’s good fortune with champagne on Sunday.
The Irish Lotto results for Saturday 23rd January were 10, 12, 13, 19, 43 and 45 with Bonus Ball 5 and, in addition to the eight-figure jackpot win, other prizes ranged from a €3 scratchcard for matching two main numbers and the Bonus Ball up to €145,229 for matching five main numbers and the Bonus Ball. Lottery officials had expected excited punters to snap up two million tickets in advance of the big-money draw, with 1,800 per minute being sold in the final hour. Lorraine O’Connor confirmed she had been called by National Lottery headquarters on Saturday night to tell her that a four-line Quick Pick worth €10, purchased on her premises, had matched all six main numbers.
Belmullet, with around 1,000 residents, has had more than its fair share of Lotto luck, with Annette Howard, who owns a Eurospar in the coastal town, confirming that her shop sold an €11.8 million-winning entry three years previously.
