Members of a lottery syndicate from Limerick have started to make plans for their new-found wealth after winning an Irish Lotto jackpot worth €11.1 million.
The lucky group matched all six main numbers - 18, 29, 36, 38, 40 and 43 - in the draw on Wednesday 4th January, ending a run of rollovers stretching back to last October.
They have now come forward to claim the eight-figure sum, having now had a bit of time for the momentous win to sink in.
No details have been released about the identities of the players in the syndicate as they have opted to stay anonymous, but it has been revealed that it was a large group. The winning ticket was purchased at Kelly’s Costcutter store in Foynes.
“The last two weeks have been a complete blur and it’s been hard for us to get our heads around the fact that we have won a prize as big as this,” said a spokesperson for the syndicate.
“We didn’t believe it at all – we must have checked the numbers on the ticket a hundred times and scanned it on the lottery app every chance we could get!
“The first couple of days, we were all dealing with the shock of it, but we’ve gotten our heads together and started to make our own plans for the money and I think we will all be very sensible when it comes to spending it.
“We are all at different stages of our lives, some of the group will be paying off mortgages and others will be looking at buying first homes so it’s a great position for us all to be in.
“One thing that keeps coming through is that we’re going to look after our family, that’s the most important thing for us all.”
Playing in a syndicate is a popular option with many players in Ireland, as it means you can team up with others to more easily purchase multiple tickets. This increases your chances of winning, while playing together keeps the costs down.
A syndicate of 64 school workers also won a EuroMillions Plus jackpot of €500,000 earlier this year.
