A syndicate of 64 teachers and school staff from St Colman’s Community College in Middleton were overjoyed to discover that they had won a EuroMillions Plus jackpot of €500,000.
The group, which has been running for several years, matched the winning numbers 1, 12, 18, 40 and 43. They had bought the Quick Pick ticket from McCarthy News, 43 Main Street in Midleton, on the day of the draw.
They wasted little time in coming forward to claim the prize, which will work out at around €7,800 each.
Rebecca Walsh, an administrator at the school, revealed that it was an especially significant win as they had played EuroMillions in memory of a staff member who died in November.
She said: “We found out this morning. Basically, I’m in charge of the syndicate here for the last six or so years… everyone takes a turn and they pay for everyone who’s in the game.
“We had a sudden death in our staff last year, in November. The girl who died, her name was Maeve [Barry].
“I used the winnings in her memory last night, to buy the lotto ticket last night and we won half a million. There are 64 of us today who are thanking Maeve, God love her.”
Walsh added that it had given everyone at the college a boost. “We needed that good news this morning,” she said. “There are 64 of us absolutely buzzing around St Colman’s here today.”
EuroMillions Plus provides players with another opportunity to win great prizes, on top of the main draw. Your main numbers are entered into the Plus draw, with the Lucky Stars discounted.
A separate draw takes place, with five winning numbers selected from 1 to 50, and you win prizes for matching at least three numbers. Match all five and you receive half a million euros, even if there are multiple winners.
