A lucky player who won a share of last Saturday’s €12.3 million Irish Lotto jackpot has revealed that he only decided to buy a ticket after overhearing shop customers talking about the game during a trip to Carrigart. He ended up scooping a fantastic €6.1 million, and is now taking some time out before making plans for the future.
One of the biggest prizes of the year was available in the draw on Saturday 6th May, and two tickets matched all six main numbers to split the magical eight-figure sum. A family from Co Westmeath came forward to collect their half of the money earlier this week, and now the man who struck lucky in Co Donegal has also picked up his cheque from National Lottery headquarters.
Explaining why he decided to purchase his ticket from Mickey Joe’s Country Store, the lucky winner, who has chosen to stay anonymous, said: “The weather was absolutely beautiful last weekend so I made the trip to Carrigart in Donegal to make the most of the good weather at the nearby beaches. I was in the local shop and there was a big queue of people buying their Lotto tickets. There was a lot of chat about how high the Lotto jackpot was so I decided to buy myself a Quick Pick.“
The small town of Carrigart has now been able to celebrate two Irish Lotto jackpot successes in the past seven months. A man landed €2.2 million last October after picking up a ticket whilst he was in the area for a wedding.
The Irish Lotto jackpot will be worth €2.5 million on Saturday after a rollover on Wednesday, while the top prize in EuroMillions is also up to a sensational €90 million.
