The dad of an Irish Lotto jackpot-winning family of six from Co Westmeath told his wife they had received just €500 to ensure their success was kept secret. In reality, the syndicate owned one of two tickets that shared the €12.3 million top prize on Saturday 6th May.
The parents of the group picked up their cheque from Irish National Lottery headquarters in Dublin and the man explained why he’d kept his wife in the dark when he called her at work after checking their ticket on Sunday morning. “If I had told her the truth, all of her work would have known,” he exclaimed, “she asked me to be sure to buy a bottle of wine to have with dinner.”
He then hid the winning ticket in a gun cabinet for safekeeping and awaited his other half’s return. "I couldn’t believe it when I got home to learn that we had hit the jackpot!” his wife recalled, “the excitement was something else."
The family have played Irish Lotto every week since the game was launched and shared the weekend’s huge jackpot with another ticket holder from Co Donegal, who has also made contact with the lottery. The winning numbers from the draw were 3, 7, 17, 21, 22 and 28 and you can find the full prize breakdown on the Irish Lotto Results page.
Each family member will receive a little over €1 million and the parents expressed their joy that their children would now be able to live mortgage-free and be set up for life. However, they insisted they would continue to work and expressed a desire to keep “carrying on as normal.” The win topped off a celebratory week for the family, with the dad of the group having bought the lucky ticket on the day his grandchild was born.
