Winning Irish Lotto Plus Ticket Retrieved from Bin

A Wicklow couple learnt a lesson this week about the importance of carefully checking lottery tickets after they nearly missed out on a €250,000 Lotto Plus 2 payday. Their winning slip spent two days scrunched up in their kitchen bin before they eventually hunted it down after hearing the prize had been hit in Roundwood, where they had played their numbers at a Centra store.
The pair chose to remain anonymous and admitted that, although they had added the Plus option to their Irish Lotto ticket, they had only looked up the winning numbers from the main game before discarding it. “I suppose we were so focused on the larger Lotto jackpot that we didn’t check our tickets properly,” said one of the winners from the draw on Saturday 7th May, “it was the following Monday when I heard that a €250,000 winning ticket was sold in the town.”
The ticket was said to be tea stained from its time nestling in the rubbish when the pair handed it in to lottery officials at the company’s headquarters in Dublin yesterday. However, it was legible enough for their claim to be verified, allowing the champagne corks to be popped in celebration of their two slices of good fortune - winning the jackpot and then finding the ticket! The news follows a story last week about a Dublin man who only discovered his €500,000 EuroMillions Plus win when his wife ordered him to tidy up paperwork he had left on the bedroom floor.
Irish Lotto returns tonight with a jackpot worth €5 million and, for a small additional fee, you can add Lotto Plus 1 and Lotto Plus 2 to your entry for a chance to win up to €500,000 and €250,000 respectively. Irish Lotto tickets are on sale at authorised retailers in the Republic, and you can find out if you are due a prize quickly and easily through the Checker.
