A man from Leinster has revealed that his ‘jaw nearly hit the floor’ when he discovered that he had won a €6.4 million Irish Lotto jackpot. Having now come forward with his family to claim the prize, he insists there will be no crazy spending as they want to carry on as normal.
The lucky family matched the numbers 3, 9, 17, 29, 42 and 43 on Wednesday 10th April. They had picked their numbers online and quickly found out after the draw that they won, but they decided not to stake their claim immediately as they wanted to take some time to let the news sink in.
Visiting Dublin headquarters more than two weeks later, they said they had no plans to quit work. The husband said: “We’ll be getting back to the day jobs on Monday. It’ll be a while before we make any serious spending plans but we’re looking forward to paying off our mortgage and a few other bills.”
An Unreal Feeling
The odds of winning the Irish Lotto jackpot are 1 in 10,737,573, and the family from Leinster admitted that it has come as quite a shock to suddenly have to adjust to life as multimillionaires.
“Even after two weeks, we still can’t believe it,” said the husband. “You always buy a ticket knowing that you’ve a chance of winning the jackpot but when it actually happens – it’s just unreal! I checked my phone after the draw and I clicked into the ticket and my jaw nearly hit the floor when I saw the €6.4million prize. It took me nearly 20 minutes to finally open my mouth to tell my wife.”
Speaking about how they had spent the period between finding out about the win and coming forward, the husband added: “We’ve been very sensible so far. We’ve purposely taken a little bit of time out to get our heads around this win. This money will make our lives much easier and more comfortable but we’ve decided to continue on as normal.”
Don’t Miss Out on Prizes
There have now been seven online winners of the Irish Lotto jackpot since 2009, valuing more than €33 million in total. The latest jackpot was one of the biggest ever to be won online.
There are many benefits to playing online. There is no danger of your numbers being lost or stolen as there is with paper tickets, while you can also take part at a time and place that suits you rather than having to visit a retail store during opening hours.
You are also notified when you win a prize of any value, and smaller awards are paid out automatically. This means that you don’t even have to check your numbers, and there is no chance of missing out on a prize if you win.
The jackpot has rolled over five times since the Leinster family matched all the numbers, propelling it up to €4 million for the next draw on Wednesday night.
