Kilkenny Family Won’t Let €8.5 Million Lotto Win Change Them

Kilkenny Family Won’t Let €8.5 Million Lotto Win Change Them

Last Updated: Thursday 26th May 2022, 08:58 am

A family syndicate from Kilkenny has come forward to claim the €8.5 million Irish Lotto jackpot that was won on Saturday 7th May. They are adamant that the win will not ‘affect them one bit’, having taken the news in their stride over the past few weeks.

The winning ticket, which matched the Lotto numbers 1, 31, 35, 39, 42 and 46, was sold on the day of the draw at Blanchfield’s Centra store in Mooncoin Co. Kilkenny.

Remarkably, the store had previously sold another jackpot-winning ticket less than three years ago, worth €6.8 million in December 2019.

The latest winners only became aware that they might have the lucky ticket a few days after the draw, but they did not get too carried away. They plan to take a bit more time to get their heads around what has happened before deciding exactly what to do with the money, although they have identified one particular charitable cause that they want to help as much as possible.

“We’ve actually been quite relaxed about it all which makes it all the more strange,” said one of the syndicate members as the family collected their prize from the Irish Lottery’s headquarters in Dublin.

“You always think that when you win the Lotto, you will be jumping around and spraying champagne, but we’ve been quite sensible in the last few weeks and kept our feet firmly on the ground.”

Reflecting on the moment they found out they won, the syndicate member added: “It wasn’t until three days after the draw that I actually checked my ticket and found out that we’d won the very jackpot prize that everybody in Kilkenny was talking about.

“We are an incredibly level-headed family and I know that this win won’t affect us one bit. It won’t change who we are, but it will certainly make things like paying off mortgages and paying bills an awful lot easier.”

“It’s a huge amount of money and the plan is to sit tight for the next couple of months before we make any big spending plans. The only real plan for spending at the moment is a local charity who we plan to support as much as we can in the coming months and years.”

The Kilkenny win was the second-largest Lotto jackpot to be paid out this year, after the record €19 million that went to a family from Co Mayo. There was another win on Wednesday 25th May, worth €3.6 million.

Anyone who wins a prize has 90 days from the draw date to stake their claim. Check your tickets now to find out if you are a winner.
