It was an Irish Lotto draw to remember for lots of lucky players on Saturday 9th May as one ticket holder landed the jackpot of €5.9 million and over 40,000 others earned cash prizes. There had been eight draws in a row without a jackpot winner until this weekend, when a ticket bought in the Midlands matched all six main numbers drawn.
The €16 ticket was actually bought at a supermarket in Mullingar, Co Westmeath where One Direction singer Niall Horan’s father works as a butcher. It is not the first time the store has produced a lottery winner, after a couple bought a €4 Quick Pick Lotto ticket there in 2013 and scooped €10 million.
The winning numbers on Saturday were 2, 5, 13, 17, 32 and 34 with Bonus Ball 45. One participant matched five main numbers plus the Bonus Ball to pocket €25,000, while another 55 players picked up €1,266 each after matching five main numbers. The other prizes ranged from €5 for matching three main numbers to €198 for matching four main numbers plus the Bonus Ball.
There were no winners of the top prizes in either the Lotto Plus 1 or Lotto Plus 2, but there were multiple winners in the Match 5 + Bonus Ball tiers of both games who all received four-figure payouts. Between the two supplementary games, there were over 70,000 prize winners in total. For a full breakdown of the prizes from the Irish Lotto, Lotto Plus 1 and Lotto Plus 2 games, check out the Results page.
The last time the Irish Lotto jackpot was won was on Wednesday 8th April, and the €2 million top prize was collected on Friday by a syndicate from Dublin. The four work colleagues, aged in their 20s and 30s, wish to remain anonymous but are planning a big night out to celebrate their success.
One of the syndicate members explained as they came forward that they started buying tickets online in January because it’s so convenient, so there is no excuse for not entering the next draw on Wednesday to be in with a chance of winning like they did.
