Workers at a store in Co Meath were left in jubilant mood after discovering that they had sold the jackpot-winning ticket for Wednesday’s Irish Lotto draw.
The jackpot had climbed up to €8.9 million - the second-largest of the year so far - and a single entry matched all the winning numbers - 3, 8, 20, 24, 28 and 29.
It turned out that the ticket was sold at Lowthe’s Londis in Duleek, bringing a great sense of joy to the local community.
Seamus Lowthe, owner of the store, said he was ‘completely shocked’ to get the call that one of his customers had become a multimillionaire.
He said: “The first thing I did was check my own ticket as I did the Lotto on Wednesday night for the first time in a while.
“I was in complete shock when the local rep called me the following day to let me know we’d sold the winning ticket. We’re a local family-run store, open 38 years and selling the Lotto 30 years and this is our first ever big win. It’s complete magic for us.
“It’s going to create some buzz and atmosphere around the village over the next couple of days. Everyone will be wondering who won.
“I hope it’s someone local, it would be great. It’s a class amount, life-changing. I’m absolutely delighted for the winner, and I’m delighted for us. We wish them all the very best.”
The winner now has 90 days from the date of the draw to come forward and claim their prize. The Lotto jackpot, meanwhile, will reset to €2 million.
