A retired couple from Co. Meath are €172,223 richer after a spot of Irish Lotto luck. The husband and wife, who purchased their ticket from JR’s First Stop shop in Ashbourne ahead of the draw on Saturday 7th January, scooped the six-figure sum after matching five main draw numbers and the Bonus Ball and now plan to use the money to treat those closest to them.
Upon collecting their prize, the couple regaled National Lottery officials with the moment they had an inkling that their numbers might have been drawn: "We were lying in bed on Sunday morning, drinking coffee whilst listening to the news on the radio and I heard the newsreader call out my Lotto numbers,” one half of the pair said. "I knew the Lotto wasn’t won but I was sure I had heard quite a few of my numbers called out but I didn’t say anything to my husband until I was sure.”
Determined to pursue her suspicions, the wife convinced her husband to come with her to their local store to investigate the possibility that they had won a prize: "After mass, we went to the shop to check our ticket and I just couldn’t believe it when I was told we had won €172,223."
Unselfishly, the couple have decided to divide their newfound wealth amongst their nearest and dearest: "We are incredibly lucky in that we do not need for anything. We have discussed this at length and we have decided to give all of the money to our grandchildren who are only starting out in life,” the grandmother explained. "They are going through school and college at the moment and we know they will need the money much more than we do."
Meanwhile, in Co Westmeath, another retired couple are also celebrating winning a sizeable sum thanks to the Irish Lottery. The anonymous pair have collected a prize of €100,000 after successfully matching one of the winning codes in the Christmas Millionaire Raffle draw that took place on Saturday 31st December. The lucky couple, who purchased their entry from Dunnes Stores in the Montree Shopping Centre in Athlone on the day prior to the draw, claim to be novices when it comes to the lottery, but might be tempted to rethink things after this success: “One thing is for sure, I will be playing more often in future,” the husband chortled.
If you would like to be in with a chance of winning your own Irish Lotto prize, entries for Saturday’s estimated €4.5 million draw are available online or from any authorised retailer across the country. Best of luck!
