A man from Co. Wicklow has expressed his gratitude after a ‘simple act of kindness’ from a customer at work helped him to win the Irish Lotto jackpot. Collecting his cheque for more than €11 million, the lucky winner revealed how much it meant for his family to win but insisted they would not change their lifestyle too much.
The player purchased his winning Quick Pick ticket from the Spar Service Station on Monastery Road in Enniskerry, Co. Wicklow, matching the numbers 10, 13, 23, 24, 25 and 44 in the draw on Wednesday 21st August. However, he would not have even played had he not received a tip from someone at work, and was full of thanks when he claimed his prize on Monday.
Recalling what happened, the winner said: “I was at work that morning and a happy customer gave me a €10 tip so I decided to pop into the Spar garage to get myself a chicken fillet roll for my lunch and with the change, I got myself a Lotto Quick Pick. It was a simple act of kindness from a customer which led my family to a win of a lifetime. It’s something I will always be grateful for.”
‘Such A Magical Feeling’
It was not until two days later that the man realised he had won, having forgotten to check his ticket straight after the draw. He was stunned when he finally learned of the windfall, and overjoyed for everyone in his family.
He said: “I was sitting in the car eating my lunch on the following Friday while I was reading the paper and I overheard a conversation on the radio about the Lotto win in Enniskerry. My heart absolutely jumped out of my chest because I knew that’s where I bought my ticket.
“I pulled my ticket out of my wallet and checked the numbers on the paper. I was absolutely speechless. I just sat there in silence. It was such a magical feeling, knowing that you’ve just won a life-changing sum of money as easy as that.”
Looking For A New Dishwasher And Oven
The €11,225,280 win was the biggest jackpot to have been seen on Irish Lotto for more than two years, but the lucky family have no plans to quit work and want to carry on with their lives as normal. They will make a few purchases but are determined to remain the same people, and have decided to stay anonymous rather than go public.
“We’re just a normal family and while the win is life-changing, it really won’t change us all that much,” said the man. “We have no intention of giving up work just yet and we’re currently making some plans to renovate the house. You always think that you’re going to go mad and lose the run of yourself when you win the Lotto but at the top of our shopping list at the moment is a new dishwasher and a new oven.”
