Caravan Owner Scoops £40,000 With Bet on Irish Lotto

A Llandudno caravan owner has had a Christmas and New Year to remember following a £40,000 windfall thanks to a bet on Irish Lotto. Carole Hoyle won the five-figure prize after placing a £1 bet at the Mostyn Street branch of Betfred on Saturday 17th December, however she failed to collect her prize straight away, sparking a local manhunt.

The 53-year-old had been out biking with her husband when she decided to stop and place the bet in what was a spur of the moment decision. It wasn’t until the 23rd of December, six days after the draw, that the former bank manager finally got round to examining her betting slip, only to discover that she was a winner: “When I checked the ticket and found out I’d won I kept on checking the ticket, and started shaking,” the lucky punter told the Daily Post.

The mother-of-five and grandmother-of-eight returned to the Betfred shop from which she had purchased her ticket, but left after deeming the shop to be too busy. It was this decision that led to staff of the gambling chain to issue an alert as they attempted to track down Carole, dubbing her the ‘lady in pink’ due to her brightly coloured cycling attire.

Following a fortnight of uncertainty, Carole, a Blackburn resident, finally emerged once again, claiming her reward from Betfred’s Darwen branch. “I had no idea they were looking for the ‘lady in pink’. My cycling jacket is just a £9 one from Aldi. I’m going to keep it now, as it’s my lucky jacket.” Carole successfully matched the numbers 6, 18, 28, 37 and 41, beating odds of 40,000/1 to claim her her prize: “I can’t believe I’ve won as I’ve never won a thing in my life. They were just random numbers that I picked,” she revealed.

The spending has already started for the big winner, who saw in the New Year in Edinburgh with her partner: “I went on a £500 shopping spree, bought some new shoes, a handbag and my hubby a new coat.” The couple now plan on using the remainder of their fortune to spruce up their smallholding in the Rhineland in Germany. “It will be a place where the children and grandchildren can come and holiday,” Carole smiled.
