Has a Syndicate of Dublin Bus Drivers Won €23.8 Million on EuroMillions?

It has been reported that Ireland’s latest jackpot-winning EuroMillions players are a syndicate of bus drivers from Dublin. There has been no official confirmation of the identity of the lucky ticket holder or even the location at which the €23.8 million entry was purchased for the draw on Friday 1st July, but the Sunday World quoted one of the members of the lottery group confirming the win.

“Yeah it was us alright”, the man is said to have told a reporter, “We haven’t all spoken to each other yet so I’m not even sure how much we will walk away with.” If reports are correct, and the 22 employees from the Broadstone Garage in the north of the capital have indeed become Ireland’s ninth EuroMillions jackpot winners, each player will receive a share worth just over €1 million.

The drivers are said to work Monday to Friday shifts, comprising four hours during the morning rush and a further four in the late afternoon. Many of the reported winners are thought to be reaching retirement age and some are believed to be members of the National Bus and Rail Union, which last week was lobbying for a pay rise of more than 30 percent for its drivers. The general secretary of the union, Dermot O’Leary, sent his congratulations to them, although he insisted he did not know their identities.

The group matched Friday’s EuroMillions winning line 2, 11, 13, 40 and 50 with Lucky Stars 1 and 10 on the second Irish-bought ticket to strike it lucky in the pan-European lottery this year. On 29th January, a €132.2 million jackpot was shared by an Irish syndicate and a French participant, with each winning ticket scooping €66.1 million. Dolores McNamara of Co Limerick remains the biggest lottery winner in Irish history, having banked a EuroMillions jackpot of €115.4 million in 2005.

Today is the winning group’s first opportunity to contact Irish National Lottery bosses and officially begin the claims process following the weekend. Make sure you keep checking back on Irish.National-Lottery.com for updates as soon as more is known about Ireland’s latest big winners.

Tuesday’s jackpot is worth €15 million and you can take part online or from authorised retailers across the Republic. You never, know, you could be putting in a call to the National Lottery claims team this week too. Good luck!
