Family Syndicate Celebrates €175 Million EuroMillions Win

Last Updated: Tuesday 27th September 2022, 09:25 am

A family syndicate has described the winning feeling as ‘unbelievable’ after being revealed as the winners of the €175 million EuroMillions jackpot. The lucky group snapped up the biggest prize in the history of the Irish National Lottery on Tuesday, but insist they do not want it to change their lives.

It was revealed early on Wednesday that the winning ticket had been purchased from Reilly’s Daybreak store in The Naul, Co Dublin, with speculation engulfing much of the country about who might be about to receive the nine-figure windfall.

The Irish National Lottery quickly confirmed that they had heard from the winner and now it has emerged that the all-important entry belonged to a family syndicate. Although it is expected to take a few days for the claim to be officially processed and the money to be paid out, the family have deposited the ticket with lottery officials for safekeeping and have already spoken to the press.

Hid The Ticket In Argos Catalogue

One of the winners explained that she had put the winning ticket in an Argos catalogue on Tuesday night and put it under her mattress. “I didn’t sleep a wink all night,” said the woman, who had heard on the news about there being a winner in Ireland and then checked the results online. She added: “I was numb! It took a bit of convincing everybody that we had won!”

A spokesperson for the winners, who is married to one of the members, talked about the family being ‘very close’. He said: “This is unbelievable - it will take us some time to get our heads around this win and to organise ourselves. This is a dream come true.”

It is still very early for the syndicate to know exactly what they want to do with their winnings, but they are determined not to get carried away and say it will just be great to be able to look after everyone in the family for generations to come.

“We don’t want this to change our lives,” said the family spokesperson. “What is so exciting is that we will be able to share this money with children, grandchildren and extended family members."

Historic Day For National Lottery

Dermot Griffin, the Irish National Lottery CEO, also offered his congratulations: “Happy days like this is what playing National Lottery games is all about. We are just so pleased for the family and that this huge amount is being shared out. This is an historic day in the life of the National Lottery with the biggest ever payout from a draw based game since we were established in 1987.”

The family’s payout is €60 million larger than the previous record for an Irish win, which was set back in 2005 by Dolores McNamara. Ireland has now had 14 jackpot winners since EuroMillions began in 2004, with 30 percent of the money raised from ticket sales going to good causes. Griffin said this particular jackpot sequence alone has ‘raised €8.9 million for organisations in the areas of health, arts, culture, heritage, youth, community and the Irish language’.

EuroMillions will be back with a €17 million draw on Friday night, giving you another chance to try and win big prizes.
