Donegal Irish Lotto Player Scoops €4.4 Million Jackpot

Donegal Irish Lotto Player Scoops €4.4 Million Jackpot

Last Updated: Tuesday 27th September 2022, 10:17 am

An Irish Lotto player, who won the €4.4 million jackpot on Saturday, bought their tickets at Daly’s Topaz in Lifford, Co Donegal. The county town, which boasts a population of just over 1,500, sits on the border with the United Kingdom and sees a lot of passing trade every day, sparking speculation as to the identity and location of the lucky player.

Saturday’s Irish Lotto Results

The winning Irish Lotto numbers on Saturday 13th January were 1, 2, 7, 33, 34 and 40 with Bonus 6. In addition to the seven-figure jackpot, a player who matched five main numbers and the Bonus Ball pocketed €283,274. Can You Play Irish Lotto from the UK?

Although Topaz store owner Austin Daly told the press that he hopes the winner is a local, he admitted, “it could be anyone with the amount of passing trade we get because we are so close to the border.” There is speculation it could be someone heading from Ireland to do business in the UK, or even someone from Northern Ireland heading into the Republic, but can UK citizens win Irish Lotto?

As long as the winner owns a winning ticket for the draw, it doesn’t matter where they live or claim residence. Many UK players cross the border every week to put money on Irish Lotto, as the 1 in 10.7 million chance of scooping the jackpot compares very favourably to UK Lotto’s 1 in 45 million top-prize odds.

Conversely, in the mid-nineties, Irish Lotto bosses made changes to the game to help produce bigger jackpots so Irish lottery fans wouldn’t flock over the border to play the big-money UK Lotto draw when it launched in 1994.

Irish Lotto Jackpot Claims

Saturday’s Irish Lotto winner now has 90 days to contact lottery headquarters in Dublin and arrange to pick up their giant cheque. They are the game’s first winner of 2018 and the first person to pick up the top prize since a ticket holder who played at WH Smith in the arrivals hall of Dublin Airport just before Christmas.
