Louth Couple Gloss Over Disappointment with EuroMillions Plus Win

Louth Couple Gloss Over Disappointment with EuroMillions Plus Win

Last Updated: Tuesday 27th September 2022, 13:21 pm

A couple from Louth celebrated on Monday as they picked up a cheque for €500,000 from Irish National Lottery headquarters in Dublin. The husband and wife landed the EuroMillions Plus jackpot after matching the numbers 1, 10, 19, 35 and 41 in the draw on Tuesday 21st March, but the pair claimed it was a case of ‘second time lucky’.

The couple’s journey to jackpot joy began back in January, when the husband of the pair first heard that a ticket worth €88.5 million had been sold at Applegreen Service Station in Lusk, Dublin. Having bought his entry from that very store, the hopeful husband was positive that his ticket was the winner: “I was absolutely convinced that I had won,” he told lottery officials. “I had the ticket for days and I was too afraid to check it.”

Of course, this wasn’t the case, as a syndicate eventually came forward to collect the eight-figure sum, leaving the husband disappointed, but more determined than ever to secure a life-changing prize: “Once I heard that the winners came forward, I promised that I would be next to win big.” And he was true to his word, scooping a EuroMillions Plus jackpot just weeks later.

The pair, who have opted to remain anonymous, purchased their winning ticket from the Ard Easmuinn branch of Dunnes Stores in Dundalk on Monday 20th March and insist they will think very carefully before splashing their earnings. The wife also confessed that while the couple come to terms with the win, their family will remain in the dark: "We still haven’t told anybody in our family, including our kids,” she said.

Despite vowing not to squander their fortune, the couple do plan to treat themselves to a well-deserved getaway: "For the last ten years, we have spent our holidays on staycation in Ireland so I think it’s time to treat ourselves to a nice sun holiday.” However, there are a number of bill-shaped holes that still need plugging, but the windfall is certain to help: “It’s a great comfort to know that we will be finally free of our mortgage,” the husband and wife smiled.

EuroMillions Plus is a supplementary game available exclusively to Irish EuroMillions players. For a small additional fee, players have the chance to win up to half a million Euros in a secondary draw that takes place following the conclusion of the main EuroMillions draw every Tuesday and Friday.

If you fancy winning your own EuroMillions bounty, this Friday’s jackpot currently stands at an estimated €58 million.
