Cork Family Syndicate Claims EuroMillions Plus Jackpot

Last Updated: Tuesday 27th September 2022, 12:50 pm

A family syndicate from Cork is celebrating after claiming a EuroMillions Plus jackpot worth €500,000. The prosperous players, who were reportedly stunned by their good fortune, correctly matched the numbers 1, 7, 14, 21 and 46 in the draw on Tuesday 22nd August to land the satisfying six-figure sum.

Having purchased their winning entry from J.J. O’Driscoll’s Superstore on Ballinlough Road in Cork, the fortuitous family were overjoyed to discover that they had joined the growing list of supplementary prize winners in 2017, a figure that currently stands at 18.

The husband of the clan, who was still in shock when it came time to meet National Lottery officials, regaled those present with the tale of how he came to purchase the entry: "I was standing in the queue of the shop and the fella in front of me asked for a Quick Pick EuroMillions ticket,” he said. "It was a case of monkey see, monkey do because I had no intention of buying a ticket until that! We very rarely buy EuroMillions tickets which makes the win more incredible.”

The man’s wife soon joined the conversation, adding that her sister had called her in jest when it was revealed where the ticket had been bought. However, when her partner produced the entry, the joking soon turned to overwhelming happiness: "I had no idea we even had a ticket so it definitely came as shock when my husband produced this winning ticket in front of my eyes,” she beamed.

When quizzed on how the couple intend to spend their money, the wife replied: "We would like to think that we’ll be sensible with the win so the mortgage will be paid once the cheque clears and after that we’ll discuss new cars and holidays homes and whatnot.” Of course, a windfall of this size certainly cannot pass by without celebration: “We have a big family so we’ll have a low-key party with them in the coming days before any decisions are made," she said.

It has been a busy week at National Lottery headquarters, with the winner of a €9.4 million Irish Lotto prize also making contact. The lucky ticket holder, who has opted to remain anonymous, correctly predicted the numbers 1, 16, 17, 32, 34 and 35 in the draw on Saturday 26th August to walk away with the game’s third largest prize of the year.
