Westmeath Family Syndicate Wins €2.3 Million Irish Lotto Jackpot

A family from Westmeath are celebrating a huge Irish Lotto win after picking up a cheque worth €2.3 million. The lucky syndicate, who collected their winnings from the National Lottery’s headquarters in Dublin on Wednesday, were one of two winning ticket holders to split a fortune of €4.6 million from the draw on Saturday 10th September.

The family, who have opted to remain anonymous, purchased their ticket on the day of the draw from the Topaz Service Station on the Ballymahon Road in the town of Athlone. Speaking on behalf of the group, a spokeswoman for the group revealed that there was a certain amount of luck involved in the win: “I was buying petrol at the Topaz and decided to do a Quick Pick for that night’s Lotto draw. I wouldn’t be a regular player, I’d play the odd time.”

Following the draw, it didn’t occur to them that they were in line to receive a life-changing sum of money. The spokeswoman said, "The next evening I was online and saw the news that a Quick Pick sold in the Topaz in Athlone won the jackpot. I thought, hang on I bought a Quick Pick there! I checked the first line – nothing and the second line – nothing. But then the third – there were all the winning numbers! I couldn’t believe it!” The family have already got plans on how some of the money will be spent: “We’re buying a house so this couldn’t have happened at a better time. We won't need that mortgage now!”

This win has allowed the group to join a growing list of big winners from Westmeath, with over €45 million in Lotto jackpots and big prizes having already been won in the area. The region’s biggest success story came in May 2013, when Carol Loran and Kevin Geoghegan from Mullingar claimed an incredible €10.6 million after buying a €4 Quick Pick ticket from their local Tesco store.

It is the first time this year that an Irish Lotto jackpot has been won by more that one player. The second of the two winning ticket holders is yet to make themselves known to lottery officials, with any player who bought their ticket from Dunnes Stores on South Great Georges Street in Dublin strongly urged to check their ticket.

Anticipation is beginning to grow once again as ticket holders begin to salivate over this Saturday’s jackpot, which is estimated to be an amazing €3.5 million.
