Ballinrobe Carpenter Celebrates €6.3 Million Irish Lotto Win

A carpenter from Ballinrobe in Co Mayo won’t be putting away his tools despite scooping a life-changing €6.3 million on Irish Lotto last Saturday. Gerard Murphy bought his winning ticket from his brother-in-law Martin Murphy, who runs the Day Today shop in town, using the same numbers he’s played for 20 years. He ended up matching the winning line of 3, 7, 11, 33, 37 and 42, bringing a series of nine rollovers to an abrupt end, but reportedly has no plans to quit working in the near future.

When Gerard told Martin that he had snapped up €6.3 million, Martin’s initial thought was that he was being set up for an elaborate joke. “I thought he was playing a prank because that’s the type of guy Ger is, he is always playing pranks on people,” he said to the Irish Independent.

“I just couldn’t believe it when Gerard popped in to say he had the winning ticket,” Martin told the Irish Times. “It’s a massive win and it’s great that his mother, Mamie, is still alive to celebrate the big windfall.” In another comment to the Irish Mirror, Martin said that he and several other family members would accompany Gerard to Dublin as he claimed his winnings.

Martin’s shop seems to be a particularly lucky one, with a punter grabbing IEP150,000 (estimated €445,000) on the Irish Lotto in 1989 and another ticket holder snagging over €315,000 on EuroMillions last year.
